Artist Statement: Over the last several years, I have been exploring the symbolism of plants in my paintings. Some of the symbols stem from my life experiences, and others are based on history.
Throughout many cultures in history, the aspen tree appears as a symbol of protection or a shield. In Greek, the word for aspen, Aspsi, means shield. The Celts favored aspen wood for making their shields because its lightweight in nature, and they believed it gave power and protection to the bearer. For me, a golden aspen grove symbolizes an escape to happiness. A place of protection from the craziness of life. I created “Aspen Shield” to portray that protection or shield that we all seek in our own lives.
